Discover our Hawaii Jungle Bunkhouse, crafted for family togetherness with a unique sleepover atmosphere. Perfectly situated for day trips, we are located halfway between the fiery Kilauea Volcano and the laid-back vibe of Hilo's beaches, shops & restaurants. Later, unwind in your private fenced area and covered patio enjoying our tropical garden and koi pond. When was the last time that you followed your spirit and intuition into adventure? Ignored time and logic, and simply followed an inner knowing, a call to the unknown? In Hawaiʻi, we call this holoholo. Holoholo literally means to go for a walk, ride or sail simply for pleasure. Holoholo Bunkhouse is located 1/2 way (25-30 min.) between Kilauea’s active lava lake & hiking trails and Hilo’s shopping, dining & beach activities. It’s a wonderful space to gather friends & family to holoholo. We are a retired couple in our 50s. We moved to the Big Island of Hawaii in 2020 and are enjoying the scenic beauty, wonderful climate and the Aloha Spirit that abounds here. We have 5 adult children who live on the mainland (USA). Our Bunkhouse is attached to our primary residence. It was built as a labor of love to be able to have family and friends come and visit. They have enjoyed it immensely. We would like to now open it up to share with others. The Holoholo Bunkhouse has it’s own entrance and outdoor space. It has a fun and whimsical sleepover atmosphere. One private bedroom with a queen bed and small closet. Living space has a bunk area with 4 individual sections. One section has a small table with benches the other 3 sections have queen beds. The living area has a couch, bench, coffee table and kitchenette. One smallish bathroom with standup shower and washer/dryer. Covered outdoor area with 2 picnic tables and Adirondack chairs. Inside the fenced area of the yard and the Bunkhouse is your personal and private space. There is a stairwell from the bunkhouse to the main house separated by a door that will be kept locked throughout your stay. The Bunkhouse is attached to our main house so in most instances we will be present on site. We start with the assumption you want your privacy and will not generally initiate in-person contact without a specific reason. That being said we are generally available via text, phone or you can knock on our door. We are more than willing to show you around the property, answer questions and make recommendations for shopping, dining and sightseeing. In summary we can be the uninterested next door neighbor or your Hawaiian uncle and auntie depending your needs and comfort level. We are centrally located on the windward side of the island. The neighborhood has a jungle feel. Houses are on 2 acre lots. It is located halfway up the the mountain at an elevation of 1500 feet making for a ideal climate. We are on the rainy side of the island so expect periodic rain showers. We do have umbrellas available for guest use. We are located in the rainforest and off the beaten path. Everything will have to be reached by car. Our location offers many options for day trips. There are few restaurants or shopping in the immediate vicinity. The closest, Dimple Cheek Cafe & Local Market, is about 5 miles (10 minute drive). While we see our little Bunkhouse as a slice of Paradise it is not a vacation 4 star resort. The experience is less like a stay a the Four Seasons Hotel and more like staying at your new favorite auntie and uncle’s rural Hawaiian guesthouse. It is a quaint blend of rural Hawaiian life and hospitality. Although we try hard to make everything comfortable, inevitably little issues can arise. We will do everything we can to address these quickly and to your satisfaction. If you’re looking to be pampered in luxury with everything every detail perfectly placed, this is not the place for you. The Holoholo Bunkhouse gives a feel for rural Hawaiian life while providing most (hopefully all) of the amenities to make your stay enjoyable. Cooking - Inside the Holoholo Bunkhouse you will find a kitchenette which includes refrigerator freezer, small sink, toaster, microwave, electric skillet, rice maker and coffee maker. We also have dishes and silverware. Outside we have a 28 inch propane Blackstone Griddle /Air Fryer with cooking utensils. Water - Our water comes from a rain water catchment system, very common for this island. The water is processed through a multi stage filter system that includes a UV light system. While we drink the water without concern, there will be some bottled water available for drinking should you have concerns. Beach Items - We have collected a number of beach items over time. (boogie boards, camp chairs, snorkeling gear, beach bags, a beach umbrella) You are welcome to use them. Please understand they are not new and we cannot vouch for their condition so use at your own risk. Noise When the sun goes down the jungle comes alive with the sound of coqui frogs. Most people find the sounds to be soothing and add to the ambiance. A few (my wife included) find them to be annoying and prefer to close the windows at night. As it is a rural area, early morning roosters and occasionally barking dogs can be heard. Animals On the property you may encounter a sometimes friendly but usually shy, black tuxedo cat named Ono. Depending on your affinity for felines, feel free to interact or to shoo him away. Although you will see a cat door on the entrance to the bunkhouse it should be locked and we ask that you please keep it locked. We do have a small koi pond. There is koi food available, feel free to feed them once per day. Because a rural Hawaiian home would not be complete without chickens, you may see chickens wandering through the property. (FYI - we do not keep chickens).
